Sensory Differences

How people can experience sound, light, touch and movement differently.

Draft for review by Charis specialists

We all take in the world through our senses. Some people feel sensations much more strongly, or much less strongly, than others.

What you might notice

  • Covering ears at loud music, generators or car hooters.
  • Finding busy markets, minibuses or crowds overwhelming.
  • Refusing certain clothes, uniform fabrics or food textures.
  • Seeking movement, such as rocking or spinning, or not noticing pain or cold.

How to help

Notice what triggers distress. Offer quiet spaces, ear protection or breaks. Let the person know before going somewhere noisy or crowded. An occupational therapist can help.
